Originally planned as an office building in the TRIOTOP business and country park in Cologne, the striking "Snake" complex was redesigned as a temporary school building. All the rooms for classes 5 to 10 of a six-year comprehensive school were accommodated here. When the building is used as offices later as planned, each floor can be split into up to six rental units. The three-storey building complex covers 7,700 square metres, around 850 of this space is taken up by storage and 52 underground parking spaces.
The sweeping cubature of Snake is reminiscent of the reptile itself; the shape of the facade with its harmoniously rounded "corners" follows the same idea. The clad facade was produced using specially formed clinker bricks in an artisanal stretcher bond to create the appearance of scaled snake skin. In the rounded corners of the building, a technically sophisticated facade construction transforms the surrounding window and balustrades into flowing curves.
WAREMA E80A2S external venetian blinds with beaded slats were used for the external sun shading system. The lateral cable guide was secured by an additional tension cable to withstand the strength of the wind at the location. RAL 7022 was chosen for the aluminium parts and RAL 9006 for the aluminium strips. The neutral colour scheme guarantees good photometric characteristics and makes the structure less susceptible to fouling.
The used control system with WAREMA climatronic® + KNX actuator 6M230 + BAline is completely in line with the annual shading that changes with the seasons and position of the sun. WAREMA climatronic® monitors air humidity, temperature and light intensity; WAREMA BAline makes the room automation system more flexible and combines the room units with the building automation network. Thanks to the sophisticated KNX control, this was how the complex shading challenges in "Snake" were met.

Our software tool supports you in planning the suitable sun shading system. The interactive, web-based tool provides brief descriptions, application examples and a wealth of additional information to help you select the right system. Furthermore, it contains a CAD configurator with which you can independently generate sections and views and adapt them to the structural conditions.
