The Erich Kästner School is one of the first public properties in Leipzig to satisfy the passive house standard, which the city made mandatory for all new buildings starting in 2008. The new school building comprises a three-storey school and a gymnasium. Both structures are connected by a single-storey day care centre (which features an accessible green roof) and form an architectural sculpture that curves through three dimensions.

The coloured large slats made of rib mesh serve as both a fascinating facade element and an intelligent sun shading system: slat tracking based on the sun's position ensures a pleasant room climate throughout the entire year.
